Le Castle Vania EP released

31 12 2006

Le Castle Vania has released the Troubletron EP on iTunes. So if your a fan you should go and support him. He’s been really great with the mp3 blog community, handing out his latest tracks for free – and completely supportive of DJs wanting to play his songs. He posted me 3 versions of Tigertron!

I’d love to see more of his work, and the best way is support him is either to support his gigs or buy some of his tunes.

Mark VII and Monotonik

30 12 2006

For those that got to listen to my first Mixtape show before I had to take it down, you may have started playing the mix and been like “WTF?”. And that would have been because of the 8 bit goodness at the beginning by Mark VII. I’d been looking around for more information about this artist, and it seemed that information on from whence they came is relatively scarce.

Then, just recently, there was a post in the Monotonik forums advertising the fact that I’m partial to a bit of Transient now and then. They also referred to the post about my first DJ set on the Mixtape Sessions and how Mark VII, “may or may not be related to a certain veteran Monotonik artist”.

The plot thickens, and I think they should officially claim Mark VII into Monotonik because, well, it’s just plain awesome.

Fast paced holiday madness

28 12 2006

xmas 022

I’ve quickly done a 170-190 bpm mix. Usually I stick around 130, so this is new territory for me. Thought I throw in some older stuff, and give a nod to John B since he sparked my interest in this whole electro genre, even though he does electro-drum-and-bass mostly. In case you noticed, there are no Christmas/Holiday themed songs here, because I’ve been driven mad by them already.

Happy Holidays

25 12 2006

Merry Christmas and all that Jazz. I’m up in Wellington visit friends and family, but thought I’d take time out from the festivities to post a little track, that is slightly ironic given the day.

Playing live on RDU this Thursday

20 12 2006

I’ve been invited to play a half hour set on RDU 98.5fm this Thursday, supporting DJ Tobias who is filling for Dr. Hitchcock.

I suspect most of my readers will be from places other-than-Christchurch, and luckily there is way for them to listen in too! After years of flaky internet streaming, it seems RDU have sorted out their problems, and you can now find a live stream from their website.

I’m playing 8:30-9:00pm (GMT+13). Here’s a handy link to a time zone converter, you want to convert from Pacific/Auckland, to whatever timezone your in.

Hope you’ll tune in!

Transient Trip-hop

19 12 2006

album-coverTransient is an artist that is signed to the Monotonik netlabel. The last album, Hexual Ceiling, is generally pretty ambient down-tempo stuff, but one track in particular I’d like to share which is kinda trip-hoppy, and isn’t that cleanly produced (intentionally I’d say) and for some reason it just exudes a certain amount of charm for me. Enjoy:

Transient – Just So I Don’t Have To Hate It

The rest of the album is also available freely from the album page, and the artist is supported by donations.

Icon of Coil

1 12 2006

soul is in the softwareIf you start regularly visiting JetPilot, you’ll quickly realise that my music tastes are extremely varied. While I prefer to DJ electro/80s fun stuff, I’m a fan of most genres to some extent and today I’m going to talk a little about an EBM (electronic body music) group, called Icon of Coil. I’m not going to debate with the EBM purists who disagree, but Wikipedia classifies them as a futurepop group as well so they are probably not the epitome of EBM.

Not that it matters…

IoC was started as a solo project in 1997 by Andy LaPlegua (also involved in side projects CombiChrist (formerly Drive), Panzer AG and Scandy), more IoC history is available over at Metropolis Records. EBM is the bastard child of industrial and dance music (IMHO both parent genres tend to look at EBM with disdain), characterized by hard and often sparse danceable electronic beats, clear undistorted vocals, shouts or growls with reverberation and echo effects, and repetitive sequencer lines.

These two tracks are from The Soul Is In The Software [ metropolis records amazon ]:

Other Half Of Me

Some more EBM artists I recommend are Cesium 137 (more synth-poppy) and Wumpscut (more industrial).
