“Just how much welt do you want?” “Extra of course!”
(This is me being weird, those lines are not in any of the tracks so far as I’m aware).
Extrawelt is one of three electronic music projects by Arne Schaffhausen and Wayan Raabe. The others being Spirallianz and Midi Miliz.
This sample track is kind of boppy in an Aphex Twin kinda way, until two thirds of the way through when electropad does its thing which is awesome. It’s off the 12″ Fernweh Drehfehler.

I really don’t care for pop music – but when an artist I admire redoes a pop tune I find it highly entertaining. In case you didn’t realise already, this a post about a couple of covers of Nelly’s “Hot in Here”. Nelly is probably an epitome of why I don’t like commercial rap/hip-hop, but I really don’t mind these covers.
Apparently it’s a popular song too. The song was parodied as “Trash Day” by “Weird Al” Yankovic, covered by BossHoss, and even Coldplay apparently do live covers.
Those are not the covers I’m sharing with you today though. Instead I give you Tiga’s electro/house version:
Tiga – Hot in Herre

Buy from eMusic

I also had another entertaining live version done by some one else, but for the life of me I can’t remember who.
Update: I remembered. It was done by a “southern rock group” called Widespread Panic. But is much more like funk then rock.
Download Widespread Panic – Hot in Herre.

You may not have heard of Suicide, and I certainly hadn’t until recently. They were/are pioneers in many genres even if not directly linked to them. I say “were/are” because they’ve had a very patchy existence since their first self-titled album in 1977, but their latest release, American Supreme, was in 2002.
Critic Wilson Neate writes that Suicide:

“would prove as influential as the Clash. Listening to their self-titled 1977 debut from the vantage point of late 2002, it’s all so obvious: the synth pop, techno, and industrial dance sounds of the ’80s and ’90s, and now the new New Wave of electroclash, all gesture back to that foundational album.”
Big words, but considering the time that the album was released, it certainly had the foundations from which those genres could spring.

You can download the entire Suicide album from eMusic (who also give you 25 free no-obligation downloads just for signing up). It’s a reissue, and includes a remix of Cheree (sounds slightly cleaner than the old recordings) and the unreleased song “Keep your dreams”. You can also buy from amazon

Tom Cosm (the last name is an acronym for Certified Organic Sound Machine), is an up and coming live psy DJ from Christchurch, New Zealand. I love a bit of psy and the fact he does all his acts live is even more impressive. What’s more, he gives his music away for free and actively asks for people to share the love! He’s an awesomely nice guy in person too.

The best way to experience his genius (short of seeing him perform) is to listen to one of his live mixes. Since I know some my referred readers are mostly electro inclined, I suggest the Fetish Ball set, as it is very electro-ey but also psy:
Tom Cosm Live At The Fetish Ball, New Zealand, 2006 [ 58:16 - 53.3 MB ]
For others that like a slower build up with more of a dubby aspect (but still definately psy), try on his Uprising set for size:

Most people online these days have heard about Burning Man – but have you heard about the regional events that other people organise? In New Zealand we’ve got KiwiBurn (although no actual Kiwi’s are burned thankfully) and I’m happy to announce I’ll be DJing there! In fact it’ll be my premiere DJ performance being physically present in front of (hopefully) a crowd. I’m pretty excited and from the sound of it, KiwiBurn will have a creatively charged atmosphere so is perfect for my first event.
Also I’ve been debating going the original Burning Man, but it just ain’t going to happen because of no moneys in my pocket. So I thought going to KiwiBurn is a good compromise (even if I should be studying instead of festivalling). Big thanks to Tatjna for her offer to give me a ride to the event!

Soulwax has an interesting section on getting permission from artists/labels for including tracks in mixes. As well as some explanation as to why some artists/labels are so tight-assed about it.
