KiwiBurn 2007 rocked my socks
17 02 2007Honestly, it was great on so many levels. We only had 150 or so people, but that was all we needed. A community was born for a weekend, everyone was your friend, we danced like mofos, and set things on fire.
It was also particularly special for me because I played my first two dj sets in front of crowds there.
My first set (on Friday) went alright, except for my headphones dying! I managed to complete my set by cheating and using auto beatmatching and guessing suitable entrance points for the next tracks. At the end my laptop died because it ran out of battery – note to self: remember to plug in power!

My next set was Sunday, after the main festival event where the man burns. Just before the man gets burnt, there was a bunch of fire spinning demonstrations. This is someone spinning fire pois. There were also fire chuks, fire staff, fire morning star, and fire whips. All of them were awesome.
This is the man right in the midst of burning to the ground.
My second set, and here you can see “old skool techno on fire!” in the background. Much thanks to happyinmotion for setting it up for my set – it looked completely mind blowing and is like having a strobe light made out of fire. This set was rocking, everyone got up and shook their booty – I even got to run away from the decks a couple of times to join the dancers.

Guess an advantage of the laptop approach is that you know what you played. I have only the vaguest idea about mine – though I definitely played K-Series, Deep Dish, New Order and finished up on Guyver’s “Man in the Moon”.
You need to do a set in Wellington.

Yeah, laptop approach makes some things alot easier – although it does mean I have to set up gear separate from the decks and mixer. It is also really handy for recording mixes too, unfortunately I was a little preoccupied (and nervous) to set up recordings on the night.

Definitely! I’d love to come up some time and if I had more cash (to change my flight times) I was going to set things up to play at a underground outdoor gig called Starstruck. I’ve got alot of friends in Wellington now, and they are planning to set up some gigs – which I’m sure they’ll get me playing at in future!
You also have a number of fans in Wellington, and you will always have a spot in any parties we put on.
So, I second doing a set here. And offer backup to help you do it.

heya , nice song selections … I too have to beat syn and guess the intros using traktor cause I don’t have a audio box to seperate the channels … I do this most all the time , can’t wait to use it proper , I’ll be even more awesome then ..hahahaha @ the end of your first set is very similiar a mix set just did with the Blamma blamma etc …. AWESOME job !!!!

Yeah it’s really good being able to cue the next songs correctly – also makes setting up loops and aligning them so that they blend it just at the right point that much easier!
