Shiny happy people

17 05 2007

Shiny was an awesome night. I turned up early to help set up the sound and decor, as did alot of the Wellington Dance Collective members. There were hundreds of silver circles to decorate the walls of the bar with, and the insides of a parachute to set up for a chill space.

Things started around 10:30, a bit later than planned as the first DJ, Dave, was coming straight from a radio show with the CDJs. He warmed the crowd up with a bit of house, and then I was on with my set, I was really happy with the crowd’s response, plus there were heaps of people I knew there, which made it a really supportive atmosphere and I mixed things up a bit. I threw in Cosm’s remix of Queen’s Another one bites the dust (download) to represent the Christchurch scene and because I knew a few people in the crowd liked Cosm’s stuff.

Tracklistings and more behind cut:

My first (electro-rockey) set consisted of:

Robot’s in Disguise – The Djs Got A Gun
The Presets – I Go Hard, I Go Home (Club Mix)
Sneaky Soundsystem – UFO (Van She Tech Remix)

Digitalism – I want I want
Duchess Says – Black Flag (Pirate Soundsystem Remix)
Surkin – Radio fireworks (Riot in Belgium second remix)

helix and ostof

Then there was Helix/Xhile up with his genre-spanning three-turntabling skill which was really impressive. I have alot of respect for this guy! He also made me a very happy man by playing Depeche Mode’s Master and Servant and later the SebastiAn remix of Bloc Party’s I remember. He also played some original stuff which I thought sounded very nice.

Oh at this point I should also mention that there was Old Skool Techno On Fire Mk 2a present – this was decribed by onlookers as a graphic equalizer on fire, which is slightly incorrect, but conveys how damn cool it looks. It’s shown in the background in the photo with Helix mixing.

tatjna and jetpilot
Throughout this, and since I know the people organising it, I was aware of how much work had been put into it. It all went off without much drama (I wasn’t aware of anything, but then I probably wouldn’t be the one to know if anything untoward did happen!). One of the organisers was the lady in the pink tiger dress and ears, the wonderful and lovely tatjna – she even made me white fur gloves (which I am wearing in this photo and continued to wear for the rest of the evening).

hoopin' lady
There was also a lot of hooping by boys and girls which was marvelous and gave people something to do if they were tired of dancing full on, but couldn’t stop moving with all the tasty music.

After Helix/Xhile was Da mix plate playing his own brand of tech-funk that was really nice and kept us dancing with intensity till 5am. He also had me on his radio show earlier in the evening, so big thanks to him for that. Plus he was literally DJing almost all night at various venues – that guys got mixing stamina!

da mix plate
After Da Mix Plate it was my turn to switch modes into chill out phase, bringing the party to a close and sending the crowd home with a good vibe:

Orbital – Halcyon (Prodigy remix)
Aphex Twin – On
Agoria – Spinach Girl
The future sound of london – Cascade (shortform) (2006 edit)
Audioditacker – Track 02
Children of dub – Outer space ( drum & bass mix )
Husky Rescue – Caravan (Serge Santiago version)
Kris Kross – Jump (Extended Mix)
Robert Smith – Pictures of You (Paulmac Remix)
Cut Copy – Hearts On Fire
Mum – Finally we are no one
Shpongle – Shpongle Spores
Space Is The Place (Intergalactic Ambient Mix) – Irresistible Force

Then I got to my friend’s place at about 6:30, had some soup, and collapsed into bed.

His Whoreness (16:51:39) :

I should have stayed for Hearts on Fire!!!

Cut Copy’s first Melbourne gig sold out in a like a day, so they’ve organised a second gig – I still arrive a week too late but oh well

Well done on Saturday by the way – definitely felt the Ed Banger love in your set and you’re right about the guy that went on after you – Master and Servant was a great choice if SebastiAn’s Bloc Party remix was unexpected

General Update on Life at ferrouswheel (17:53:55) :

[...] I’ve so far had two events in clubs (more here and here) and one outdoor event at KiwiBurn. I have another couple events lined up in June, so I’m looking forward to those. Generally my sets have been pretty well received, and I get a real buzz from the whole experience. It’s definitely something I’d like to keep up with and take as far as I can. [...]

Aww – I’ll try and play it on Friday if the mood is right, Hearts on Fire was a really good comedown track.

I was really impressed that Helix played that remix. I mean, I know WE like SebastiAn but it’s nice to here other people playing that stuff too :)
