Spring Equinox

25 09 2007

Last weekend I went out to Bullock Creek in North Canterbury for Massive Production’s Spring Equinox outdoor dance party. I had fun dancing around, weather was good until about 2am when it started spitting, but it wasn’t unbearable, just resulted in some muddy pants.

I took video of both Tobiaz and Cosm playing:

Cosm and some mixes
Tobiaz and his Nitrate mix

Sorry for the darkness and less then great sound. I really should get a proper vid cam instead of using my ancient digital camera…

Daft Punk in Melbourne + looking for gigs

21 09 2007

I alluded to perhaps going to see Daft Punk in December. Turns out that things have fallen in place to allow me to get over there to see them on the 14th December in Melbourne. If there’s anyone reading my blog in Melbourne and wants to meet up then feel free to email me or leave a comment. Meeting new people is fun!

DJ for hire. I also have a request for anyone in Melbourne or Sydney who knows any promoters/club-managers who’d be happy to have a DJ from New Zealand come and play for their event in or their club. Check out any of my mixes on here to get and idea of my style (although it’s pretty adaptive to the audience). I don’t charge much, pretty much just looking for a bar tab to cover frivolity for the evening. ;)

Email me if you’re interested for the exact dates I’ll be around.

Canaan Downs Promo Mix

19 09 2007

Today I just finished a new mix for submission to the Canaan Downs Festival over New Years Eve. Up round Nelson way. I haven’t been to a NYE festival before, despite wanting to for years, so I’m really looking forward to this. Hopefully the organisers will like my mix too, and extend an invitation my way.

Come pick 'em up

Pnau

Wild Strawberries is the new song from Nick Littlemore and Pete Mayes aka Pnau and my god is it good.

When Australian music blog Who The Bloody Hell Are They? posted it yesterday, I was hooked. It’s light, it’s clean, it’s fun and best of all it thumps like an absolute bitch.

Can’t wait to hear the rest of their expected-November-release album. When it comes out. In November.

Now if you’re like me and waiting is something other people do, you should be gladdened to know Nick and Pete have been beavering away on their own side projects…

Nick has been recording as Teenager with Pip Brown formerly of Two Lane Blacktop (now of Ladyhawke) and this union produced debut album Thirteen. Thirteen is a seriously good album. I mean REALLY good. It’s got quite a lot going on but it never goes so hard out you swiftly find yourself pushed into hating it. Instead it gives you just enough to love and enjoy it. Liquid Cement is the first track off this varied and balanced album.

For his sins, Pete has been part of The Hate Game (formerly known as Vendettas). Both incarnations used to have myspace pages but American men in their 30s seem to have hijacked their virtual real estate. That was of course not before they released a great track called Running. Running is another gem I happened upon thanks to Who The Bloody Hell Are They? (I hope you’ve learned by now that this is a blog you really should follow) and for a track that swims in similar waters to a lot of the indie rock coming out of Australia right now, Running kicks along at a clip I find hard to resist.

EMO-THUG 2

15 09 2007

DJ Morsy released his second mix “Still Emotional” with a bunch of boot-legs.

My favourites would have to be:

Unk Vs. Spektrum/Tiefschwarz – New 2 Step

Ninjasonik Vs. Guns’n'Bombs – Tight Pants (Rmx)

Usually I’m not so much into the rap/hip-hop, but these mashups are pretty good!

Mixtape Sessions video

15 09 2007

So I decided to record a bit of the Mixtapes Sessions show from 13th September:

A couple of the mixes were not so good, I blame space monkeys.

Mixtape Sessions appearance

12 09 2007

I’ll be doing another guest mix on the Mixtape Sessions on RDU. Streaming available from the website. I’m on 8:30-9pm (GMT+12) Thurs 13th of Sep.

I have some other things to say too, but they’ll have to wait till I get some more time to write.
